The 2025 Africa Cup of Nations is causing a stir in the Premier League! But when exactly will clubs have to bid farewell to their star players? Brace yourself for a potential squad crisis!
The official word is out: Premier League clubs must release their players for the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) by December 15, 2025, a Monday. This date is non-negotiable, as FIFA has confirmed after discussions with the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
Here's the catch: players will join their national teams six days before the tournament's opening on December 21, 2025. That's a tight turnaround! The final is scheduled for January 18, 2026, a Sunday, giving players ample time to prepare.
FIFA has encouraged clubs and national teams to negotiate player release dates in good faith, especially for those involved in continental competitions. But, they've also made it clear that they will step in to mediate and apply guidelines if disputes arise between clubs and countries.
For many clubs, this means the last chance to field their players will be the weekend of December 13-14, 2025, before the players jet off to Morocco for the tournament. However, some clubs are facing a tricky situation as they have games scheduled on the very day players are due to join their national teams.
Controversy alert: Manchester United, for instance, will host Bournemouth on the day players are expected to leave. United has three players set for Afcon: Bryan Mbuemo (Cameroon), Amad Diallo (Ivory Coast), and Noussair Mazraoui (Morocco). Bournemouth's Amine Adli is also expected to represent Morocco.
United had hoped for an extension, especially for their home game against Bournemouth on December 15. Head Coach Ruben Amorim expressed his concern, stating, "We're trying to keep the players a bit longer, but it's not entirely in our control. We'll attempt to negotiate with the federations."
So, will clubs be able to negotiate player release dates, or will FIFA's guidelines prevail? What do you think? Share your predictions in the comments below!
