In a poignant revelation, Cary Elwes, famed for his role in 'The Princess Bride,' has shared a touching tribute to his director, Rob Reiner, who tragically lost his life. This statement comes more than two weeks after the shocking news of Reiner's alleged murder by his own son, Nick.
On December 30, 2025, Elwes took to Instagram to express his deep sorrow and fond memories of Reiner. "It’s been long enough that I can now articulate my grief. I first encountered Rob Reiner when I was just 24 years old while working on The Princess Bride. From our very first interaction, I was captivated by him," Elwes, now 63, reflected in his heartfelt post.
He continued, "Being a fan of his work prior to meeting him made this experience feel surreal. As we began to collaborate closely, I realized he was someone whose presence I wanted in my life. By casting me as Westley, he handed me an incredible opportunity, almost like giving me the keys to a magical kingdom."
Elwes also noted that one of the most striking things about Reiner was his openness and emotional depth. "Rob wore his heart on his sleeve. He was a man who genuinely felt for others, filled with love and compassion. To him, wealth and privilege didn't matter; what counted was whether you were a decent person. He consistently sought the good in everyone around him."
Beyond his iconic role in the beloved 1987 fantasy film, Elwes also featured in the 2015 drama 'Being Charlie,' which Rob directed and that was co-written by his son, Nick.
In a tragic turn of events, Nick Reiner has been charged with the stabbing deaths of both Rob and his mother, Michele, at their home in Brentwood, California, earlier this month.
