The recent success of the F1 movie has left many wondering about a potential sequel, especially after its unexpected nomination for Best Picture at the Oscars. It's a topic that's generating a lot of buzz, and fans are eager to know if they can expect another installment. Fortunately, Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali and Apple executive Eddy Cue have shared some insights during a recent press event.
"I received one last question that everyone seems to be asking," Cue mentioned while chatting with Domenicali. "It's my favorite inquiry of all, almost like a boomerang since both of us will give our thoughts on it: Will there be another Formula 1 movie considering how successful and well-received the first one was?"
Domenicali responded with a hint of optimism for fans hoping for more. "Stay tuned," he said. "We plan to share more details in the future. Never say never. However, we need to fully appreciate the success of this movie because it truly was something extraordinary. If we do decide to create a new one, it must be exceptionally good. Therefore, if this happens, it won't be next year. But perhaps by this time next year, we’ll have more to announce."
Cue also took the opportunity to emphasize what Apple is currently doing with F1 to keep fans engaged until a sequel becomes a reality. "I've got an exciting announcement to make. This year, we have 24 F1 movies on Apple TV," he elaborated, drawing a parallel between the 24 actual races scheduled for the season and the thrilling Brad Pitt film. "I can't predict the outcome, which makes it the best unscripted drama out there!"
Reflecting on the first film, Domenicali recalled a meeting in February 2021 when Cue, along with director Joseph Kosinski and producer Jerry Bruckheimer, approached him with their vision. "I was captivated by the idea but also concerned about creating the right environment to ensure the project felt authentic and genuine. It was vital for us to depict our world within a Hollywood context credibly," he noted, concluding that they succeeded in delivering an "incredible experience" for both F1 and Apple.
This conversation leads us to believe that a sequel to the F1 film is indeed likely, and given the original's remarkable performance, it would be surprising if they didn't pursue it. Released in June 2025, the film is now Apple TV’s highest-grossing project, raking in around $630 million worldwide. Notably, it also stands as Pitt’s most lucrative film and holds the record for the highest earnings of any sports movie to date. With such impressive figures, it seems unlikely that executives from both sides would want to miss out on the opportunity to capitalize on this success, although the timeline for a second entry remains uncertain.
For those eager to catch up on the excitement, the F1 movie is currently available for streaming on Apple TV+.
