In the world of horse racing, few names shine as brightly as that of Ian Balding, the renowned trainer who recently passed away at the age of 87. His career was a testament to skill, dedication, and an extraordinary connection with horses, especially the iconic Mill Reef. But was it all down to luck or sheer talent?
Balding's career spanned four decades, and while he saddled an impressive 1,755 winners on the flat, it was Mill Reef who became the star of his story. This exceptional horse, a true champion, won the Derby and the prestigious Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe in 1971, solidifying Balding's place in racing history.
But here's where it gets interesting: Even the most seasoned trainers acknowledge that finding a horse like Mill Reef is a stroke of luck. However, Balding's expertise was evident in how he managed this remarkable colt. After a string of victories, including the Greenham Stakes and the Derby, the young Mill Reef, with jockey Geoff Lewis, went on to conquer the Eclipse Stakes and the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes. But the real test was yet to come.
As the season stretched on, Balding faced a trainer's nightmare: the risk of his star horse burning out before the Arc. He admitted to the challenge, saying, 'I had this awful feeling I had done too much with him.' But his skills prevailed, and Mill Reef, with Lewis aboard, won the Arc by three lengths, a new record. This victory marked a rare feat, with Mill Reef becoming only the second horse to win the Derby and Arc in the same year.

Born in the US, Balding's destiny was intertwined with horses from an early age. His father, Gerald, was a British trainer, and the family moved to the UK when Ian was seven, setting up a yard in Weyhill, courtesy of an American millionaire.
Ian's education took him to prestigious schools and Cambridge, where he excelled in rugby and amateur jockeying. After his father's death, Ian assisted his brother Toby at Weyhill. But fate had other plans, and in 1964, he became an assistant trainer at Kingsclere, stepping up after the trainer's untimely death. Despite initial doubts, Balding embraced the challenge, soon sending out winners at Royal Ascot and in royal colors.
One of his key owners was the wealthy Paul Mellon, who bred Mill Reef, a horse like no other. Balding's career soared, with 123 jump winners and notable victories at Sandown and Cheltenham. In 2002, he retired, passing the Kingsclere yard to his son, Andrew.
