Get ready for a game-changer! Apple's iOS 26.4 is set to revolutionize your in-car entertainment with a major new CarPlay feature. But here's where it gets controversial...
At WWDC 2025, Apple dropped a hint about allowing CarPlay users to watch videos via AirPlay while their vehicles are parked. Now, the first iOS 26.4 beta hints at this feature's imminent arrival.
The iOS 26.4 beta's source code reveals several references to CarPlay's video streaming functionality. While the feature is still under wraps, software developer Thomas Dye managed to unlock it partially in Xcode's CarPlay simulator on Mac. He showcased it in a YouTube video, giving us a sneak peek.
When an iPhone is connected to CarPlay, it seems like videos from any AirPlay-supported app can be displayed on the car's screen. Interestingly, the Dynamic Island has a button that lets you switch the video back to the iPhone when needed.
The demo also hints at an Apple TV app on CarPlay, allowing access to shows and movies from the Apple TV streaming service and personal libraries. There's even a tab for MLS Season Pass, but it's unclear if the Apple TV app will be as feature-rich in the final CarPlay version.
The simulator provides an early glimpse of CarPlay's video streaming, albeit a bit clunky. Expect the feature to be ready by iOS 26.4's public release in late March or early April. However, there's a chance Apple might delay it until iOS 26.5 or later if development takes longer.
Apple's website indicates that automakers need to implement support for CarPlay video functionality due to safety requirements. This means it might take some time for the feature to become widely available.
So, what do you think? Are you excited about the prospect of watching videos on your car's display? Or do you have concerns about potential distractions? Share your thoughts in the comments!
