Here's the science behind it: the beet juice derivative lowers the freezing temperature, enabling salt to work more efficiently in hazardous conditions. Instead, the plan is to pre-wet the salt with the beet juice before application, creating a coated salt mixture that will be spread onto the roads.
But here's where it gets controversial... While calcium chloride is effective at melting ice, it's not so kind to the environment or the state's equipment. The new beet product is less corrosive, meaning it won't damage road maintenance trucks as much. This could save the state money and extend the lifespan of their vehicles.
Kentucky is well-prepared with 1,500 trucks and a dedicated team of 2,300 snow-fighters, ready to tackle any winter weather. New cameras have also been installed to help identify problem areas.
