Michigan Snowstorm Update: Major Warnings Expand, With Detroit Forecast Slightly Adjusted
Brace yourselves, Michigan — the snowstorm we’ve been eyeing all week is officially here, and the latest update shows it hitting right on schedule. But here’s where things get interesting: forecasts have shifted again, expanding storm warnings and slightly tweaking what’s expected in southeast Michigan. And this might not be the final version — there’s still room for surprises.
The newest update adds fresh Winter Storm Warnings for Michigan’s Sunrise Side — stretching from Saginaw Bay up through Alpena and Rogers City — plus parts of Mackinac County in the Upper Peninsula. Meanwhile, the Thumb and the eastern section of the Detroit metro area fall under a Winter Weather Advisory. The difference? Those areas should see slightly less snow — roughly one to two inches less than elsewhere in the state.
Timing is everything with this system. The warning end times vary depending on location: central Michigan should see conditions ease by around 10 a.m. Sunday, while eastern Lower Michigan will keep dealing with it until about 1 p.m. In the far southwest — where lake-effect snow lingers longer — flakes might keep flying until 7 p.m.
And this is where most people might miss a key shift. Forecast models overnight didn’t change much for the storm overall, but there’s one subtle, important adjustment for far southeast Michigan — including Detroit and Ann Arbor. The predicted mix of sleet, rain, and snow is now expected to lean almost entirely toward snow. Only areas near Monroe and downtown Detroit might get a short window of rain around sunrise Sunday. Still, meteorologists warn that if the low-pressure system drifts just slightly, it could bring back that precipitation mix. These small shifts in track often make the difference between a wet slush and a deep blanket of snow.
Radar projections suggest the snow will start light, picking up as the day progresses. For most of eastern and northern Lower Michigan, flakes shouldn’t fully arrive until around midday, while snow begins earlier this morning across the southwest. By late afternoon — around 5 p.m. — virtually all of Lower Michigan will be under snowfall, with slick roads likely from Detroit through Cadillac to Traverse City. The far northeast corner might stay dry a bit longer, but by nightfall, everyone’s in it.
By 8 p.m., even much of the Upper Peninsula joins the action. Models show the heaviest snow bands setting up over southern Michigan tonight.
Snow totals? They’re holding steady from earlier projections. Expect 4 to 7 inches across most of the state. Southwestern regions could pick up between 6 and 11 inches thanks to added lake-effect snow. To put it simply:
- The western half of Michigan — including Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, Battle Creek, Muskegon, and Ludington — should plan for roughly 6 to 10 inches.
- Traverse City and Cadillac can expect 5 to 8 inches.
- Eastern Lower Michigan, with cities like Lansing, Ann Arbor, Flint, Saginaw, Bay City, and Midland, should receive 4 to 7 inches.
- Metro Detroit looks on track for about 3 to 5 inches total.
Not all the news is harsh, though. By Sunday afternoon, as the snow tapers off, southern Michigan temperatures might inch up toward 33°F — just enough to slightly melt accumulation on main roads and ease travel later in the day. However, those driving near Lake Michigan’s southern edge should watch for bursts of heavy lake-effect snow continuing into the evening.
Travel tip: If you need to head out, try leaving early Saturday or postpone any return trips until after Sunday afternoon. Road crews will need time to clear the heaviest snow, especially in the western and southern parts of the state.
