This is the story of PC Matthew Pike, a 40-year-old policeman overwhelmed with emotion when he was acquitted of causing a motorist’s death during a reckless high-speed chase through the heart of Bristol. The incident unfolded shortly before midnight on November 4, 2021, when PC Pike was attempting to follow a white Volkswagen Tiguan driven by Lewis Griffin. According to court testimony, Pike's vehicle reached speeds as high as 93 mph—well above the normal city limits—as he pursued Griffin through bustling Bristol city center.
The pursuit came to a tragic end when Griffin’s car collided with a Honda Jazz, which was being driven by Keryl Johnson, a 35-year-old woman. The crash was catastrophic, and Dr. Johnson sustained severe injuries that ultimately led to her death several days later in the hospital. Griffin, aged 23 at the time, was later sentenced in February 2024 to eight years in prison after admitting to causing death through dangerous driving. He was also banned from driving for a decade.
Following the incident, PC Pike faced charges of causing death by dangerous driving, as well as an alternative charge of causing death by careless driving. Ray Tully QC, representing Pike, presented evidence from an expert in police pursuits, who testified that Pike’s driving was neither dangerous nor careless. Based on this professional opinion, Judge Edward Burgess QC evaluated all the evidence, including the prosecution's case, the training Pike had received, and his conduct during the chase. After careful consideration, the judge concluded that there was insufficient evidence to prove Pike's actions were either reckless or negligent.
