Scottish Water's £13.4bn Plan: Future-Proofing Scotland's Water Infrastructure (2026)

A bold vision for Scotland's water future has been unveiled, with a £13.4 billion investment plan over six years. This ambitious program aims to tackle aging infrastructure, climate challenges, and maintain the country's reputation for low water charges.

The majority of the funds, a whopping £8 billion, will be dedicated to maintaining and enhancing the core infrastructure, including pipes and treatment facilities. The remaining amount will ensure the smooth operation and essential maintenance of water services across Scotland.

But here's where it gets controversial... Scottish Water, a publicly owned utility, proposes an annual customer charge increase of 3.3% above CPI to fund this massive investment. With over 53% of households already receiving financial support, the utility assures that assistance schemes will continue.

Chief Executive Alex Plant emphasizes the plan's focus on providing high-quality, reliable services while keeping bills affordable. He highlights the input of over 25,000 people in shaping this strategy, emphasizing the need for fairness and affordability.

And this is the part most people miss... As a publicly owned business, every penny Scottish Water receives is reinvested into customer services, ensuring a transparent and accountable system.

The proposals are now under scrutiny by the Water Industry Commission for Scotland, with a draft determination expected in June. The final decision, setting confirmed investment levels and charges for the 2027-2033 period, will be made in October 2026.

A detailed Delivery Plan will be released ahead of the new regulatory cycle, providing further insights into this transformative investment.

So, what do you think? Is this a fair and necessary step to future-proof Scotland's water infrastructure? Or is it a controversial move that may impact customers' pockets? Share your thoughts in the comments!
