Are you passionate about peace and security in West Africa? The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) is seeking a dedicated Researcher for its Sahel/West Africa Programme (SWAP). The SWAP, a key part of SIPRI’s Conflict, Peace and Security research cluster, focuses on understanding conflict dynamics, peacebuilding efforts, governance, and security issues across the Sahel and West Africa. They collaborate with a diverse range of partners, including African civil society organizations, academic institutions, international NGOs, and other key players. Their projects are supported by funding from the EU, UN agencies, and various government donors.
What will you be doing?
The Researcher will be deeply involved in all aspects of the research process, with a strong emphasis on quantitative methods. Here’s a breakdown of the key responsibilities:
- Research Design and Data Collection: You'll be instrumental in developing research methodologies and sampling strategies for surveys and perception studies. This includes coding questionnaires using tools like Kobo Toolbox or ODK, training and supporting data collection teams, and ensuring high-quality field operations. Data management and maintaining data integrity will also be part of your role.
- Data Analysis and Visualization: This is where your analytical skills come into play. You'll conduct statistical analyses using software like R or Stata and contribute to data visualization using tools such as QGIS, Tableau, or Power BI. You'll also be responsible for maintaining SWAP’s databases and documentation.
- Research Outputs and Knowledge Sharing: You'll contribute to reports, policy briefs, articles, and other high-quality research outputs. You'll also support proposal development and fundraising efforts, and mentor junior staff, including research assistants and interns. Collaboration with other SIPRI programmes is also expected.
- Ethics and Compliance: Ensuring adherence to ethical standards and data protection requirements is crucial. You'll also participate in fieldwork, dissemination activities, and partner meetings, primarily in Africa, following SIPRI’s safety assessments.

- Fluency in both French and English (spoken and written).
