The Detroit Lions' recent week has been nothing short of a rollercoaster of emotions, leaving fans reeling. Remember the buzz when Frank Ragnow's unretirement was announced? Hope surged, painting visions of a Lions team peaking at the perfect moment, ready to make a deep playoff run. Were those expectations perhaps a tad overblown, fueled by the excitement of the moment? Likely. But for a fleeting 24 hours, the possibilities were exhilarating.
What followed, however, was a cascade of unfortunate events for the Lions.
First, star wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown suffered an ankle injury. Then, the team stumbled against the Packers on Thanksgiving, with a costly 0-2 record on fourth-down conversions compared to Green Bay's 3-3. To add insult to injury, another officiating controversy arose, further fueling fan frustration. And before anyone could fully digest their Thanksgiving feast, the Dallas Cowboys pulled off an unexpected victory, followed by the Chicago Bears spoiling Black Friday with their own stunning upset.
And just when the Lions' playoff hopes seemed to be dwindling, Frank Ragnow failed his physical and will not be rejoining the team. We never got to see his return to the field or hear about his decision to retire.
But wait, there's more. The Sunday Rooting Guide for the Lions' playoff odds went 1-3, with the only positive result carrying the unsettling feeling that the Carolina Panthers might still be in the Wild Card race. Then, Kerby Joseph sparked concern with some social media posts before deleting his accounts and giving a brief, somber media session about his potentially chronic knee injury. And finally, just before the PODcast recording on Monday night, news broke that Terrion Arnold's second season is over due to impending shoulder surgery.
Other than that, how was your holiday?
